An undercurrent of enigma or secrets, often challenging characters and the audience alike to decipher the indiscernible. Intrinsic to the genre, a sense of mystery evokes a sense of inscrutable yet palpable fear. This mysterious essence enhances the enigmatic allure of the genre, inviting readers to explore the labyrinthine intricacies it weaves. The performance will be surrounded by video in the former movie theatre space of the beautifully refurbished Presidio Theatre! This theatrical exploration goes to the earliest roots ( ) of this hero, Jerry Garcia. We go on a time trip journey into Garcia’s early life as it plays out in our City, in the Mission District of yore. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993, “Angels in America” is a sprawling, two-part play that uses magical realism to explore the AIDS crisis in America in the 1980s. The play tells the stories of a group of characters, including a gay man with AIDS, a Mormon couple, and a drag queen, as they struggle to come to terms with their own mortality and the changing world around them. The play’s use of fantastical elements, including angels and ghosts, serves to heighten the emotional intensity of the story.

This project is one of the recipients of the prestigious Gerbode Foundation Theatre Commission Award. Smiley is a do it all theatre maker and as the Program Director for Bay View Opera House has revitalized their audiences and programming the past few years. Our Performance Pass is about offering the most exciting array of artists and performances, while making it accessible and welcoming to all, true to our mission. We discussed it as a mixture of magical realism, musical theatre and children’s theatre.This year I’m doing The Unravelling by UK playwright Fin Kennedy. Also some super cool magical realism stuff, with slight influences of Epic theatre.

First performed in 1944, “The Glass Menagerie” is a classic play that uses elements of magical realism to explore the inner lives of its characters. The play tells the story of the Wingfield family, and particularly of the protagonist, Tom, as he struggles to come to terms with his family’s past and his own identity. Through the use of haunting music and dreamlike sequences, the play creates a sense of otherworldliness that draws the audience in and leaves them questioning the nature of reality. These otherworldly landscapes are not mere settings but active elements that imbue the narrative with allure and complexity. Central to magical realism is the juxtaposition of the fantastical with the realistic so that the former is accepted as a natural part of the world’s fabric. This renders the surreal components unremarkable to the characters within the play, even if their coexistence would be logically infeasible in a purely realistic setting. Magical realism often draws upon multiple artistic forms for its expressions.

While Latin American authors made magical realism what it is today, authors had previously written stories about mundane situations with fantastical elements before magical realism was a recognized literary genre. Playwright In Residence Star Finch and Resident Curator Juan Amador, Resident Producer Jerome Gentes, and designers Russell Champa, Tanya Orellana, Joan Osato, Christopher Sauceda, and Brittany White, Hybrid Program by Ashley Smiley. The space is open year round now for engagement and entertainment, arts and activation from the plays to the people- the Magic Theatre is Home for bringing the City inside. In magical realism, cultural myths, folklore, and archetypes are seamlessly integrated into the narrative.

This play is a testimonial about people and their struggles with hope. The story unfolds over a few days in the life of Sloosh, our protagonist. We follow Sloosh – a young Queer AfroLatina from Bayview Hunters Point caught up in a transcendental rut.

And so, it is not surprising that I consider ritual magic to be rather inherently theatrical and performative. Yes, the largest cultural festival in Wales is held by Druids! But no, not modern Pagan Druids per se, but cultural Druids. They are our custodians of the arts, and many of the higher-ranking Druids of the Gorsedd are distinguished poets, writers, musicians, actors, and more.
